Summary

Great Expectations, Dickens' funny, frightening and tender portrayal of the orphan Pip's journey of self-discovery, is one of his best-loved works。 Showing how a young man's life is transformed by a mysterious series of events - an encounter with an escaped prisoner; a visit to a black-hearted old woman and a beautiful girl; a fortune from a secret donor - Dickens' late novel is a masterpiece of psychological and moral truth, and Pip among his greatest creations。

I love Dickens and really enjoyed this book。 Pip’s story and the other characters are endearing。 He grew up and finally realized what is truly important in life and that riches don’t equal happiness。

Pip is such a lovable character and Dickens really immerses you in this story。 I would have condensed some parts but if you like detail and feeling like you really are in the time and place of the story, you'll love it。 Pip is such a lovable character and Dickens really immerses you in this story。 I would have condensed some parts but if you like detail and feeling like you really are in the time and place of the story, you'll love it。 。。。more

Dropped at 166/432 pages。Just couldn‘t get into it, it already took me months to get to a third and it was definitely holding me back from reading other books。 There was not much happening in my opinion, just a regular boy growing up whose life didn’t really seem more exciting to me than those of the people around me。 There were a lot of words for not much happening and I feel like all the plot relevant stuff—if you can even call it a plot—could’ve been told in a good 50 pages without being too Dropped at 166/432 pages。Just couldn‘t get into it, it already took me months to get to a third and it was definitely holding me back from reading other books。 There was not much happening in my opinion, just a regular boy growing up whose life didn’t really seem more exciting to me than those of the people around me。 There were a lot of words for not much happening and I feel like all the plot relevant stuff—if you can even call it a plot—could’ve been told in a good 50 pages without being too fast-paced。 Maybe bildungsroman type novels just aren’t for me。Might give it another try some time later, possibly in my mother tongue so I don’t have to struggle through rather difficult English while not being drawn in enough by the story to keep me going。 。。。more

Boring characters and drags on a lot。 The plot was interesting and the pieces coming together slowly but that was most of what kept me interested。

Written in the first person, “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens, narrates the story of a born in gentry boy named after Pip that was given the opportunity to raise in his social standing in the most unexpected circumstances。 From his early childhood years, when young Pip used to be abused by his sister, and her arrogant but often caricatured as ridiculous acquaintances。 Into his horrendous meeting with a noble standing old widow named Miss Havisham, that broadened the spectre of his aspirat Written in the first person, “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens, narrates the story of a born in gentry boy named after Pip that was given the opportunity to raise in his social standing in the most unexpected circumstances。 From his early childhood years, when young Pip used to be abused by his sister, and her arrogant but often caricatured as ridiculous acquaintances。 Into his horrendous meeting with a noble standing old widow named Miss Havisham, that broadened the spectre of his aspirations into being a so called “gentleman” in order to strive to be put in equal footing with a radiant, but proud, very unforgiving and somewhat capricious girl called Estella。 And so young Pip begins to be influenced by the perception with which he is received in a well-off small circle, to the point that he despises his commonness and is blinded by the status and as a consequence departs from his true friends, Joe and Biddy, when one day he is given the opportunity to study in London and promised great wealth from a anonymous benefactor。 In this novel, it’s depicted the contracts in between a “gentleman” that is perceived by his fortune, upbringing and aesthetic, with a “gentleman” of simplicity that is wise, honourable and stayed always true to his character and word。 Not only that, but underlies a strong reflection that even when one gets the opportunity that he’s longed for in his life, the expected results may not come with it and failure is always possible even when it’s most unexpected。 But there isn’t always remorse in it, for the redemption and correcting of ways will fix the bad and guide to do the good, even if it’s not as glamorous as it was expected。 For in the end, a pure character and zeal towards duties leads toward fortune, but snobbishness and over confidence leads to decay。 。。。more

I know I read all or most of this middle school, but wanted to revisit some of the classics。 I liked it, but I didn't love it。 There were some good twists and turns, but Dickens is just not really my style。 I may give one or two more of his books a read though。 I know I read all or most of this middle school, but wanted to revisit some of the classics。 I liked it, but I didn't love it。 There were some good twists and turns, but Dickens is just not really my style。 I may give one or two more of his books a read though。 。。。more

sadly i didn’t enjoy this book as much as i had hoped to :( but there were warm characters whom were comforting。 i felt like there was too much description and explaining compared to actual storytelling, which let the book down (in my opinion)

4️⃣。。。Such a big disappointment Pip a child with great wishes ,at least realizes that smallest situation can turn to the greatest happiness

I don't think this is his best novel。 As usual I enjoyed Dickens' wit and sarcasm。 I liked the characters, I got some Jane Eyre vibes too。 I wonder how long the book would have been if it wasn't serialised。 Worth the read。 I don't think this is his best novel。 As usual I enjoyed Dickens' wit and sarcasm。 I liked the characters, I got some Jane Eyre vibes too。 I wonder how long the book would have been if it wasn't serialised。 Worth the read。 。。。more

It's hard to rate classic literature, but I found this story delightful。 The many coincidences and outlandish decisions that part of the plot hinges on could certainly be a reason to quibble, but the characters are so distinct and Dickens's wit describing them is subtle enough to make it even funnier。 The scenes with Pumblechook are some of the funniest, and the character growth that Pip experiences make this a good read for young people even if the language feels archaic。 It's hard to rate classic literature, but I found this story delightful。 The many coincidences and outlandish decisions that part of the plot hinges on could certainly be a reason to quibble, but the characters are so distinct and Dickens's wit describing them is subtle enough to make it even funnier。 The scenes with Pumblechook are some of the funniest, and the character growth that Pip experiences make this a good read for young people even if the language feels archaic。 。。。more

I'm surprised I enjoyed this book as I always identified myself as someone who doesn't like "the classics"。 I love the overall premise and find it's something we can all relate to。 With that said, there was a lot of boring chapters throughout that didn't really pertain to anything。 I skimmed over a bunch of those parts and didn't miss anything important to the story。 I'm surprised I enjoyed this book as I always identified myself as someone who doesn't like "the classics"。 I love the overall premise and find it's something we can all relate to。 With that said, there was a lot of boring chapters throughout that didn't really pertain to anything。 I skimmed over a bunch of those parts and didn't miss anything important to the story。 。。。more

A bit dull at times but has a playful setup with the reader where we can anticipate to some extent where the story is going and yet still be engaged in the plot。 Its because of excellent character building and great plot twists。The rise and fall of pip's fortunes and twisting perspective of what it means to be fortunate are all thoroughly enjoyable and though none of the characters are easy to identify with they are painted in such a sympathetic light that it is hard not get attached and a littl A bit dull at times but has a playful setup with the reader where we can anticipate to some extent where the story is going and yet still be engaged in the plot。 Its because of excellent character building and great plot twists。The rise and fall of pip's fortunes and twisting perspective of what it means to be fortunate are all thoroughly enjoyable and though none of the characters are easy to identify with they are painted in such a sympathetic light that it is hard not get attached and a little emotionally affected by the conclusion。Deservedly a classic 。。。more

I have tried so many times to read Charles Dickens, and only with the help of an audiobook have I managed to finally finish one。 I can understand why his books and writing style are so renowned, but I have to say, it’s just really not for me

I read this in 2019。 Charles Dickens is just not for me。 So boring and bleak。

I remember reading the first part of this in middle school, but definitely didn’t finish it。 I think it is worthy of the praise and high ranking it receives due to the excellent writing, iconic characters, and slowly unveiled backgrounds that are far more tightly woven then you’d suspect。 The way that wealthy people play with poorer people as if they are toys is raw and frustrating, and this is a great tale to show why our entire social stratification needs to come crumbling down。 I but if Dicke I remember reading the first part of this in middle school, but definitely didn’t finish it。 I think it is worthy of the praise and high ranking it receives due to the excellent writing, iconic characters, and slowly unveiled backgrounds that are far more tightly woven then you’d suspect。 The way that wealthy people play with poorer people as if they are toys is raw and frustrating, and this is a great tale to show why our entire social stratification needs to come crumbling down。 I but if Dickens wrote the phrase “Great Expectations” into the book one more time, I would have set it on fire。 。。。more

The writing is still really difficult to consume and audiobook helped a lot。 That’s the main reason for only three stars。 Besides that, the story is pretty incredible if not a bit unbelievable。 I do grow fond of pip through his foibles and growing pains。 He certainly knows how to get himself in a jam and somehow has people everywhere to bail him out 🤔
